Kiwi information report

We have been learning how to write information reports

Kiwi

Kiwi are a native bird to New Zealand. There are 5 species of Kiwi. Female kiwi are bigger than the male kiwi.

Appearance

Kiwi are a small bird about the same size as a chicken.

Kiwi have wings 5 cm long but they do not help them fly at all.

They have brown feathers that look like human hair.

They also are one of the only birds that have nostrils at the end to their long beak. Kiwi also have whiskers to help them find food.

Habitat

Kiwi live in forests in old hollow logs or in burrows in the ground. Kiwi are also nocturnal.

Diet

Kiwi eat berries, spiders, snails, slugs, seeds and insects but they mainly eat worms.

Breeding

Female kiwi lay one egg per year. Kiwi have the largest egg in the world compared to the size of their body. The male kiwi normally inhabits the baby kiwi. It takes 80 days to hatch. Kiwi are born fully feathered. The same kiwi mate for the rest of their lives. 5% of baby kiwi survive to become adults.

Threats

Cats, dogs ,stoats, possums, weasels and rats are all threats to kiwis because they kill them.

80 years ago there used to be 5 million kiwi in New Zealand but now there are only about 60,000 kiwi left.

How kiwi saved the forest

We read the big book of how kiwi saved the forest here is my kiwi before  and after he lost his wings

Speech

My speech topic is why dogs make good pets. I chose this topic because I know lots about dogs. When I presented my speech I felt happy. What I did well was my speed. What I could have done better was nothing, I did well.

Here is my speech:

Did you know that dogs make good pets? Dogs have been around for over 10,000 years. Dogs evolved from the grey wolf and dogs are said to be man's best friend but I think that dogs are friends to everyone. These are my 3 reasons why I think dogs make good pets.

Dogs are good pets because they protect you by barking, growling and warning you if  someone is there or if someone is on the property. Say if you were going on a walk in a forest and someone was trying to attack you your dog could scratch, bark and growl which would scare them away.  It might even hurt the person trying to attack you.

Dogs love us and snuggle us because we look after them as well as they look after us. Dogs like to have our company. Dogs like to be patted. And dogs are a type of animal that need attention and affection.

Dogs are easy to train because they will listen to you if they get a treat after they do something good. If  you hold a treat in your hand, tell your dog to sit and move back slowly they should sit. If you give them a treat when they sit then they learn that is the right thing to do when you say sit.

It doesn't matter if you don't like dogs but they are good pets to have. Dogs make good pets because they love you, keep you company when you need it and they also protect you!
