Kiwi information report

 We have been learning how to write information reports

Kiwi

Kiwi are a native bird to New Zealand. There are 5 species of Kiwi. Female kiwi are bigger than the male kiwi.

Appearance

Kiwi are a small bird about the same size as a chicken.

Kiwi have wings 5 cm long but they do not help them fly at all.

They have brown feathers that look like human hair.

They also are one of the only birds that have nostrils at the end to their long beak. Kiwi also have whiskers to help them find food.


Habitat

Kiwi live in forests in old hollow logs or in burrows in the ground. Kiwi are also nocturnal.

Diet 

Kiwi eat berries, spiders, snails, slugs, seeds and insects but they mainly eat worms.

Breeding

Female kiwi lay one egg per year. Kiwi have the largest egg in the world compared to the size of their body. The male kiwi normally inhabits the baby kiwi. It takes 80 days to hatch. Kiwi are born fully feathered. The same kiwi mate for the rest of their lives. 5% of baby kiwi survive to become adults.  


Threats

Cats, dogs ,stoats, possums, weasels and rats are all threats to kiwis because they kill them.


80 years ago there used to be 5 million kiwi in New Zealand but now there are only about 60,000 kiwi left.
